The Construction of the Charing Cross Station Hotel
Charing Cross Station Hotel is shown on the far left of the composition, partially concealed by scaffolding. The view is from the north-east corner of the station courtyard with the top of the Nelson Monument visible over the West Strand block. To the right of this, in the distance, is the front of the National Gallery and on the extreme right are 448 and 449 Strand. The hotel was one of the first buildings in London to be faced with artificial stone and the painting shows the partial erection of the hotel's main entrance. It was constructed between 1863-1864 to designs by E.M. Barry, architect of Covent Garden Theatre, and opened on 15 May 1865.
