Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1901-1910
The Church of St John, Hampstead
Lavery's impressionistic painting is a view down Church Row, Hampstead, looking towards the parish church of St. John.
Church Row is one of few streets in London that retains its early 18th century character. The houses on the south side are complete and date from about 1720 while those on the north side, some of which are seen here, are less regular in design and vary in date.
Sir John Lavery's 'open air' painting displays the qualities of the late 19th century French impressionist movement, such as visible brushstrokes, light colours and everyday subject matter.
