Lambeth Palace with a Distant View of Westminster and The Strand
In the foreground of this painting is Lambeth Palace, situated on the south riverside.
From left to right can be seen the Rectory of St. Mary, the Gatehouse (Morton's Tower), the Church of St. Mary and the Great Hall. On the extreme right are the kitchen block, the stables and the orchard of Lambeth Palace. Westminster Hall, Westminster Abbey and Old Somerset House are depicted in the background.
Despite inaccurate details (such as additional windows on Morton's Tower), F. W. Smith's painting portrays the general appearance of this part of London towards the end of the 17th century and is consequently of considerable geographic interest.It dates after 1682 since it shows the steeple of St Clement Danes, completed in that year and before 1687 as it doesn't show the alteration sto Whitehall Palace made in 1687.
The painting was engraved in the early nineteenth century and the viewpoint is that of Hollar's Prospect of London and Westminster taken from Lambeth, c. 1643.
