A West Indian Sugar Sale
This painting depicts an auction of sugar with an auctioneer shown on the rostrum presiding over a sale. Samples of the sugar being sold are on the table, along with a sheet inscribed: Auction/Cork/IDAS/. . . /Hall Esq. (which suggests that the auction was held in Cork).
Several figures are portraits of merchants: Andrew Barron, a partner in a London sugar-importing firm and the first owner of the picture, is seen on the extreme left. The costume and a comparison with photographs of Barron indicate a date of about 1860.
