Paintings, Prints & Drawings — C. 1675
The Great Fire of London, 1666
This work is derived from an oil by Jan Griffier the Elder,( c.1652-1718) born in Amsterdam, who is recorded as being in London soon after the Great Fire of 1666. The location of the original painting is unknown but a lithograph was made of it in the early nineteenth century so its existence is verified. This particular painting is one of two oils in the collection derived from the missing oil (see 27.142). It shows a more distant view than the other work of the Fire with St Paul's Cathedral in the centre of the composition.
It should be emphasised that this is not an accurate view.
