Portrait of E. K. Fownes
This three-quarter length portrait celebrates the Victorian coachman Edward K. Fownes( 1850/51-1943).
Born into a coaching family, Fownes was considered the best coachman of his profession from 1888 until the 1900s. Known universally as Ted Fownes, he drove the 'Old Times' coach for Lord Leconfield and the 'Nimrod' for Captain John Spicer. The artist has portrayed Fownes wearing a smart brown overcoat and a grey top hat in a landscape setting. He has just finished putting on his brown leather gloves, possibly in preparation to take control of the horse-drawn coach seen in the right background.
Thomas Sheard ( 1866-1921)was a painter of landscapes, portraits and genre scenes but he is best known for his Oriental subjects. He studied in Paris before residing in London where, in 1915, he was appointed Professor of Art at Queen's College.
