La toilette
Rose Henriques' s painting depicts women washing laundry in their backyards in Berner Street, Stepney, East London.
Many houses in the poorer parts of Stepney had little in the way of interior plumbing, even in the period just before the Second World War. The yards are separated by wooden fences and occupy the centre of the canvas. The backs of two rows of two-storey terrace houses are seen on the left and right, with taller buildings beyond.
A self-taught artist, Lady Henriques ( 1877-1972)specialised in views of Stepney and scenes in the East End. This is one of several works by her in the Museum's collection. Other views draw upon her experiences as an air raid warden during the war, which were exhibited, along with this painting, at Whitechapel Art Gallery in 1947. She married Sir Basil Henriques a magistrate in East London.
