Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1886
Drury Court with the Church of St Mary-le-Strand
Based on an earlier print of 1878, Watson's painting depicts the beginning of Wych Street, seen on the left, with part of the north frontage of Bates's British Coffee House. Some road-works are in progress: workmen are portrayed in the foreground, near a brazier and a couple of carts. While the right side of the picture is shrouded in shadows from the tall buildings, the spire of the Church of St. Mary-le-Strand is clearly visible in the distance.
Charles Watson (1846-1927) was a member of the Royal Painters and Etchers who lived in Norwich and London.
