Allen's Tobacconist Shop, Hart Street, Grosvenor Square
The artist, Robert Allen, was the proprietor of this tobacconist's shop at 20 Hart Street, Grosvenor Square. As advertised outside, Allen was also a writer and a sign painter. While the traditional trade signs of the tobacconist surmount the fascia, various posters can be seen outside the shop: a steamer service by the 'William George' and 'Royal Adelaide' is advertised as operating between London Bridge and Margate, Deal and Dover.
There are also placards for London theatres, including the Royal Haymarket and Covent Garden. Part of Allen's own shop sign is visible inside the door - it is a copy of a well-known painting by Thomas Barker called 'The Woodman', also in the Museum's collection.
Hart Street no longer exists as it was replaced in 1886-7 by Brown Hart Gardens.
