Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1928
In the Rotten Row One Evening
Yoshio Markino's painting looks towards the gated archways of the Hyde Park Corner screen from Rotten Row. The heavy traffic suggests that the evening 'rush hour' is in progress. Markino exhibited this work in 1929 at the New Studio Gallery in Knightsbridge. Most of the pictures in this one-man show demonstrated his efforts to capture the effect of evening light in oil paint. In this canvas, the artificial lights of the city begin to take over from daylight. Markino creates an atmospheric scene, capturing a fleeting moment at dusk.
Born in the old Japanese province of Mikawa, Markino came to London in 1897 and lived in Fulham. He was a painter of genre scenes specialising in the illustration of British life.
