Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1851-1875
Thames Barges
William Calcott was a painter of coastal and river scenes who lived in various locations in London. Between 1844 and 1879 he exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists. This painting, produced during that period, depicts several barges and other craft drawn up on the riverbank, with a man at work on one of the boats. The sails of the boats are highlighted against the pale background and the River Thames can be seen winding round on the right.
