Charing Cross and Northumberland House
This is a popular view derived from a Canalletto view of 1753 which was painted many times. The equestrian statue of Charles I by Hubert le Sueur and Northumberland House are seen in the centre of this painting. The statue is dramatically highlighted against the backdrop of a cloudy sky. A man is filling a barrel from a pump in foreground while pedestrians stroll around the streets.
John Paul (1804-87) was principally a topographical painter and a copyist of London views. A duplicate of this painting, with an identical frame, is in the collection of the Duke of Northumberland at Alnwick Castle.
