The Thames looking towards Waterloo Bridge
This is one of a pair of paintings by Charles Deane which explore the impact of Waterloo Bridge on London's cityscape. Designed by John Rennie, Waterloo Bridge was opened in June 1817 and originally called Strand Bridge. The spires of City churches and the dome of St. Paul's Cathedral can be seen beyond the bridge. In the foreground, a Thames waterman prepares to ferry passengers across to Lambeth.
