The Vale of Health, Hampstead Heath
Looking eastwards from below Jack Straw's Castle, this painting focuses on a part of Hampstead Heath that was marshland until the end of the eighteenth century when it was drained and christened the Vale of Health.
By including a man reading a newspaper and a mother with two small children in the scene, the artist highlights the use of the heath for leisure and fresh air during the summer months. Holding a parasol and wearing a hat, the woman is suitably protected against the bright sunlight.
