Regent Street Quadrant at Night
This view of the Quadrant, from Glasshouse Street looking southwards towards Piccadilly Circus, shows the entrance to Swallow Street in the distance and is unusual in that most artists tended to focus on the Quadrant from Piccadilly Circus itself.
Built in 1818-20, the Quadrant was one of the most impressive features of the 'Royal Mile' designed by John Nash to link the Prince Regent's palace of Carlton House with Regent's Park and joined Lower Rent Street with Regent Street in a clever architectural device to resolve the curved direction of the route. It was the only part of the street built by Nash himself.
As well as three late Victorian omnibuses, six hansom cabs waiting at a cab stand can be seen in the foreground. Early telegraph poles can be spotted on the roof, highlighted against the night sky.
