Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1841-1850
Shepherdess Walk, Hoxton
This view of Shepherdess Walk looks south towards St. Luke's Workhouse, which can be seen in the far distance. On the right are the Metropolitan Baths at 23 Ashley Crescent. On the left is Shaftesbury Street, with the Royal Standard public house on the corner. Further along, a number of people have gathered before an archway, which may be the entrance to a chapel. Behind the trees on the left is part of the facade of the Grecian saloon or theatre, which was attached to the famous Eagle Tavern. Borgnis' painting is a detailed view of this part of London, which lies between City Road and Regent's Canal.
