Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1901
Newgate Prison from the Garden of St Sepulchre's Church
On the corner of Newgate Street and Old Bailey stands Newgate Prison, designed by George Dance the Younger. It replaced the old Newgate Prison but was later demolished in 1902, shortly after this picture was painted. The dome of St. Paul's Cathedral looms over the gaol.
Two omnibuses pass hansom cabs and an assortment of carts. Traffic congestion was a problem even in 1901. Durham trained at the Royal Academy schools and went on to become a portrait, genre and topographical painter as well as a book illustrator.
