Blackfriars Bridge and St Paul's from the River
Built using Portland stone, Blackfriars Bridge was completed in 1769. Extensive repairs were carried out between 1833 and 1840 until it was decided to build a new bridge on the same site. Originally named after the current Prime Minister, William Pitt, the Bridge was later renamed after Blackfriars Monastery nearby.
In this painting, the River Thames is portrayed as a busy thoroughfare with vessels carrying cargo, a paddle steamer and barges all competing for space. In the foreground a man on a raft with an oar travels towards the arches of the bridge. St. Paul's Cathedral is seen in the distance.
