Firework Display in Hyde Park
Charles Wylie's painting was commissioned by the newspaper 'The Sphere' and published shortly after the National Peace Day celebrations, which took place across England on 19 July 1919. The public events to celebrate the official end of World War I were carefully planned. They included a triumphal peace march and an extravagant fireworks display in Hyde Park, which is depicted here. During the display, 10,000 rockets were fired. The scene is surveyed from a point above the south-west corner of the Serpentine Bridge and looking north-east towards Mayfair. On the left-hand side of the painting the word 'VICTORY' is spelt out in brightly burning letters which probably formed part of the lavish display.
