Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1835
Greenwich Hospital from the River
This view of Greenwich waterfront includes two riverside blocks of Greenwich Hospital: Queen Anne's Block and King Charles' Block. One of the most important buildings of its age, the Hospital remains the grandest complex of baroque architecture in London. Beyond are the Ship Tavern and the houses in Maiden Row, facing the river. Several rowing boats are seen on the river and some figures are grouped on the landing stage in the foreground. The costume indicates a date of about 1835 and the view dates from before the building of the Trafalgar Inn in 1837.
