Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1828
This View of the Old London Bridge, and the New London Bridge in progress in June 1828
A view from a point on the north bank midway between New London Bridge on the right (under construction) and Old London Bridge on the left. Very similar to A23109 but at a higher state of the tide. By the early 19th century, old London Bridge had become very dangerous. Craft navigating though its arches had to survive a near 2-metre drop from one side to the other. Also, the bridge was in need of constant repair. A decision was finally taken to build a new crossing directly upriver of the old one to the designs of John Rennie. This view looking south shows the two crossings alongside each other. Old London bridge remained in use until the new one was completed. A dedication to Alderman John Garratt "by whom the first stone of the New London Bridge was laid during his mayoralty, on the 15th of June MDCCCXXV" is inscribed as if for publication.
