A performance at the London Coliseum

This is a view of the stage of the Garrison Theatre at the London Coliseum.

Although the stage is crowded with actors and musicians, the spotlight is on the couple standing together at the front of the stage. Grace Golden sketched them in more detail in a smaller drawing in the left hand corner. The performers are framed by a curtain and in the foreground several rows of spectators can be seen.

This depiction of the interior of the London Coliseum is one of several theatre studies by the artist. Situated on St. Martin's Lane, the Coliseum was opened on Christmas Eve 1904 by the theatre entrepreneur Oswald Stoll. The London Coliseum was relaunched several years later as a variety theatre, offering a range of entertainment to visitors. Today it is the home of the English National Opera Company.
