George Cruikshank's Omnibus: No IV
This engraving formed the wrapper to a publication called 'George Cruikshank's Omnibus' issued in nine monthly parts between May 1841 to January 1842. This one was issued in August 1841 as number 4 in the series. George Cruikshank (1792-1878) a famous caricature artist produced the drawings and engravings for the journal which was published by Tilt & Bogue referenced in the engraving as conductors and their shop named as the booking office.
The Omnibus represented one of a series of publications intended to showcase Cruikshank's own work. He claimed that the idea for Punch was taken from he Omnibus and its contributors included Thackeray.
George Cruikshank hired his nephew Percy to engrave this humorous design showing the back of a horsedrawn omnibus crowded with passengers, shown in motion. The fare is advertised as one shilling and the public would have to run to catch up to jump on the omnibus. Percy had apparently annoyed his uncle by calling himself Cruikshank the Younger.
