Our culture & values
We want our people to feel valued, to bring their whole selves to work and to love what they do. We work hard to create a workplace that is friendly, healthy and inclusive.
Our behaviours
Our behaviours reflect our ways of working and underline everything we do, like building good relationships, promoting inclusion and thinking creatively:
The doors stay open – proactively fostering a culture of inclusion and accessibility
Take good care – caring about our assets and resources, for a sustainable future
Contrast and connect – working well with others and promoting collaboration across the museum
Put on a great show – thinking creatively and striving to deliver the best possible results
Keep your feet on the street – externally connecting and embracing learning, insight and analysis
Our commitment to a healthy workplace
We’re signed up to the Mental Health at Work Commitment to ensure a healthy workplace for everyone, with the help of our Mental Health Champions.
We have a wide range of staff benefits to support good mental health both at and outside work. We also have a mental health action plan, developed following our participation in the Mental Health Wellbeing Index.
Becoming a Disability Confident Leader
We’re proud to have achieved our ambition of becoming a Disability Confident Leader.
This means we’re making progress on our commitment to ensure that we're recruiting, retaining and developing disabled people and that we're removing barriers disabled people could experience when working for us or applying for our roles.
Our work on disability inclusion includes the following activities:
- we have a thriving and growing Disability Staff Network who advocate for disabled staff and strive to build a community of disabled staff at the museum
- our Workplace Adjustments Guide helps make sure that all of our staff are appropriately supported by their managers to access adjustments
- we collect and analyse information that our people share with us so we can make sure they’re receiving the support they need and we can understand what disabled representation looks like across our people
Our work on equity, diversity and inclusion
We're committed to being an equitable, diverse and inclusive organisation. We have an Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Strategy in place and we’ve made measurable commitments across everything we do as an employer and a museum, including commitments around our people and culture.
We’re also working towards becoming a truly anti-racist organisation. We’ve undertaken a collaborative research project to help us to identify the most pressing actions we need to take to change our culture and embed anti-racism in the ways we work, which are outlined in our Race Equity Action Plan. To support this work, we’re a member of Inclusive Employers and a signatory of the Race at Work Charter.
Our staff networks
We have collaborative staff networks which are led by staff, for staff, and are supported by the organisation. Our networks provide peer support for staff with similar shared experiences, run events and also support the museum to meet its equality objectives set in our EDI Strategy.
We currently have the following staff networks:
- Disability and Inclusion Network
- Global Majority Staff Network
- Parents and Carers Network
- Proud History Champions (LGBTQIA+)
- Women for Leadership Network
