For decades, London’s history has been written at night, across clubs and community spaces, smoking areas and dancefloors.

Whether inspiring people to move to London, reshaping neighbourhoods, driving economic growth or shifting political perceptions, nightlife continues to play a pivotal role in the city’s identity.

But how are these processes influenced by the stories we tell about late‑night culture? How can music journalism support grassroots scenes, uncover hidden stories and push conversations in positive, constructive directions?

Hosted by freelance journalist and author Ed Gillett who has spent the last decade covering the politics of London’s nightlife for The Guardian, Resident Advisor, DJ Mag and others, this workshop explores why documenting, celebrating and investigating the late‑night city remains vital.

Participants will gain practical insight into documenting nightlife culture, learn how to develop and pitch strong story ideas, and take part in a guided discussion and Q&A around the challenges of getting work commissioned.
