The Ceremony of Opening London Bridge August 1st 1831
John Rennie’s new London Bridge was opened by King William IV and Queen Adelaide on 1st August 1831. The celebrations were a grand affair involving a flotilla and a banquet in a specially erected pavilion. The event was reported in the Times as being ‘the most splendid spectacle that has been witnessed on the Thames for many years’, and proved to be a popular subject among artists. Clarkson Stanfield and George Jones both produced oil paintings, and a slew of printmakers rushed to commemorate the occasion. According to an inscription on this plate, Thomas Allom obtained ‘especial Permission of the London Bridge Committee’ to draw the event.
