Frost Fair
The Frost Fair on the Thames in January 1740, showing various tents and booths - coffee houses and printing shops - on the ice, with a good view of the river front development of three-storey houses.
There is a verse about the frost. At the top the date January 28 1739/40 is given but in a panel below with the name of the purchaser - Mary Burton - is the date January 29. The panel has a border of colophons etc and an inscription about the early history of printing. The etcher's name is illegible - C.M. V...?? - but is the same as for A9298 (the same etching).
