A Perfect Description of the Firework in Covent Garden that was performed at the Charge of Gentry and other inhabitants of that Parish for ye joyfull returan of His Matie from his Conquest of Ireland, Sep 10, 1690
Extravagant firework displays were generally reserved for the celebration of military victories and peace treaties. Here is shown King William's successful campaign in the Jacobite War in Ireland (1689-91). William of Orange had arrived in Britain in 1688 during the Glorious Revolution. This aquatint shows Covent GArden piazza at night with St Paul's Church on th eright and fireworks illuminating the scene. At this date in 1690 Covent Garden was relatively respectable but its reputation progressively declined. It is one of the most popular London scenes.
