Maitlands's History: Bethlehem Hospital
Bethlehem Royal Hospital is the world’s oldest institution caring for people with mental disorders. At the time this engraving was made Bethlehem was based in this baroque building in Moorfields, designed by Robert Hooke in 1676.
There were two main floors with long galleries where the patients spent their days. They also had individual rooms opening off the galleries.Until 1770 the public could pay to view the patients at Bethlem as a form of entertainment.
