South View of the Theatre Royal in Portugal Street, Lincoln's Inn Fields

South view of the Lincoln's Inn Fields Theatre, also known as Lisle's Tennis Court and as the Duke's House, and (as here) as the Theatre Royal, Portugal Street ". . . open'd in the year 1714, under the direction of the late John Rich Esqr, with the comedy of 'The Recruiting Officer'. Now the Salopian China Warehouse." It was originally a (royal/real) tennis court, built in 1656, converted to a theatre in 1661. It was closed for many years before the (re-)opening referred to in the caption to the print. Its career as a theatre ended in 1733 when Rich moved to a new theatre; it was pulled down in 1848.
