This painting shows a view of Peel Terrace, Creek Road, in South East London at dusk or daybreak. A woman wearing a red dress and an apron stands by the front door along with a child and a maid who sits on the steps: all three look out into the road as though waiting. Inside the house the curtains are drawn. The artist's signature in the left hand corner is integrated into the ambiguous scene. Spencer's teaching career spanned over forty years and he made many studies, sketches and paintings of London from c. 1923 to c. 1957. He was Principal of the Norwich School of Art between 1946 and 1964 when this painting was made.
