Dr Syntax in St Paul's Church Yard - Wet & Windy Day
Dr Syntax's wig blows away, his umbrella blows inside out and Queen Anne's statue glances down as skirts are lifted in the struggle against the wind. Originally produced for the part-work "The Tour of Doctor Syntax through London, or the Pleasures and Miseries of the Metropolis" (plate 17, p.250; London 1820). Attributed to various artists, of whom the most plausible is Charles Williams (fl.1790-1830).
