Westminster Hall, trial of Warren Hastings
Depiction of the trial of Warren Hastings at Westminster Hall. Warren Hastings (1732-1814) was the first Governor-General of India from 1773 to 1784. He was an employee of the East India Company. A scholar of Indian culture, he instituted administrative reforms to allow Indians to live according to their customs (a new idea at the time) but also used unlawful tactics to ensure the development of the colonial power. He returned to London in 1786 and was impeached, accused of financial crimes, but was eventually acquitted in 1795.
