Hungerford Market, Strand
This engraving depicts old Hungerford Market before it was demolished and the new market opened in 1832. It was situated on the Strand and sold produce such as fish, including periwinkles and shrimps and poultry. Here the dairy of Thomas Olley is shown producing buttter for sale and the last letters of the modest shed housing the British Fire Office are also visible. In the shed was kept the company's manually operated fire engine. The Thames is just visible in the background. In 1859 the new market was in turn demolished to make way for Charing Cross Station.
Thomas Hosmer Shepherd (1792-1864) was a prolific artist who produced 193 drawings for London and its Environments in the Nineteenth Century, published 1830-31, in which this engraving appeared. He had ben commissioned to draw buildings prior to demolition so a lasting record would be kept.
