The Dust Cart
Noel Spencer's etching depicts an unidentified London street. Dustmen pour the contents of rubbish bins into a cart, which is attached to a horse preoccupied with the contents of its nosebag.
Born and raised in Lancashire, Spencer studied at the Royal College of Art during the 1920s. His career spanned almost forty years, during which time he taught in Birmingham, Sheffield and Huddersfield. He was Head of Norwich School of Art for nearly twenty years, where his memory has been honoured with the annual Noel Spencer Award for Painting.
