Hudibras and the Skimmington
Hudibras and the Skimmington. One of a set of 17 small illustrations by Hogarth for Samuel Butler's poem Hudibras. (He also made a set of 12 large illustrations.) See Paulson no 94 (plate 98). A Skimmington was a procession to make mock of shrewish wives and henpecked husbands -- they were placed on a single horse and accompanied by appropriate effigies. This is a reversed version of 82.580/4.
