Saxon & Medieval — Medieval; 14th century
St Thomas Becket
Pilgrim badge with the head of St Thomas Becket within a Lombardic letter ‘T’, for Thomas. The decorative shape of this letter was used to good effect, and, more often than not, the horizontal top stroke was worked into a substantial, elaborate, crown (missing in this example). This letter is decorated with pellets and the outer edges are delicately beaded or pearled. The attachment clip is missing. 14th century.
The Becket badge is more complete than other examples of its type and its presence in London simply reflects the degree of veneration which St Thomas Becket attracted in his native City.
