Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; late 15th century
Stag's head badge; Secular badge
It has proved impossible to find a direct parallel. Richard II’s device of the hart lodged (lying down) make their first appearance at the Smithfield tournament in October 1390, and variant forms of hart badge in pewter are known from 14th and 15th century contexts. Whether this badge was made for a specific individual or as some kind of general souvenir is unknown.
