Stamp Office,Somerset House
This plate from the 'Microcosm of London' (published by Rudolph Ackermann's Repository of Arts) was engraved by Joseph Constantine Stadler. The figures were drawn by Thomas Rowlandson and the architecture by Augustus Pugin. It depicts the Stamp Office which moved to Somerset House in 1789. The print shows clerks working at long desks. The Stamp Office was responsible for taxing newspapers and other documents.
