The Royal Academy of Arts, instituted by the King, in the Year 1768
A large mezzotint engraving of the Royal Academicians by Richard Earlom after the famous painting by Johann Zoffany in the Royal Collection (commissioned by George III). The image depicts the original Royal Academicians attending the life class at the Royal Academy. As well as representing an important group of artists, it demonstrates the appearance of the academy shortly after it was established and provides an insight into its teaching methods.
