The English Spy: The point of Honor decided, or the leaden argument of a love affair
This aquatint was published in 'The English Spy,' a satirical work written by the journalist Charles Molloy Westmacott under the pseudonym Bernard Blackmantle.
Isaac Robert Cruikshank provided prints for many of Westmacott's publications. His father Isaac and his more famous younger brother George were also caricaturists. The two brothers collaborated on the illustrations for Pierce Egan's 'Life in London'.
Duels were commonly fought by members of the gentry in London's open spaces. Cruikshank's aquatint shows a man being shot by his opponent as their 'seconds' look on. Westmacott mocks the code of conduct governing duelling or, in his words, 'instructions for man-killing according to honour'.
