Life in London: Tom Getting the best of a Charley
One of the illustrations to Pierce Egan's 'Life in London; or, The Day and Night Scenes of Jerry Hawthorn, Esq. and his elegant friend Corinthian Tom, accompanied by Bob Logic, The Oxonian, in their Rambles and Sprees through the Metropolis', ' a work which was issued in monthly parts from October 1820 to July 1821 this aquatint shows one of the central characters Tom provoking a Charley or Night watchman. Shown on th east side of Temple Bar which frames the Strand and St Clements in the background and lit by a full moon, Tom is portrayed as a Regency dandy causing trouble. His friend Jerry laughs at the incident with two prostitutes.
Egan's work was hugely popular, assisted by the deft aquatints produced by the Cruikshank brothers.
