Life in London: Tom & Jerry in Trouble after a Spree
This aquatint was published in Pierce Egan's 'Life in London; or, The Day and Night Scenes of Jerry Hawthorn, Esq. and his elegant friend Corinthian Tom, accompanied by Bob Logic, The Oxonian, in their Rambles and Sprees through the Metropolis', issued in monthly parts from October 1820 to July 1821. It was a huge success as a current satire on London, illustrated primarily by George Cruikshank.
It depicts the interior of a watch-house at night. The constable in charge sits in his hooded chair on the right, book and pen in hand, holding his long pipe, a tankard beside him. He frowns perplexedly at Tom, who stands at the bar while an angry watchman points to him and Jerry struggles with several watchmen.
