The Steel Yard etc. Thames Street
View of the Steel Yard, Thames Street from the river, as it appeared after the Great Fire. 'Its proper name was Stael Hoff, a German term meaning a general house or place for merchandize, from which 'steelyard' is a corruption, this being the site where the Hall & Warehouses of the Esterlings or Hanse Merchants stood'.
