Paintings, Prints & Drawings — C. 1788
The Royal Dockyard at Woolwich
This painting provides important evidence of the appearance of the Royal Dockyard at Woolwich in the 1780s. It shows the newly-completed entrance to the docks, the Clock House (built 1783-4) with the new offices in front, and the tower of St Mary Magdalen Church. A ship, surrounded by scaffolding and bearing the Royal Standard, is under construction on the slipway. Robert Dodd trained at the Royal Academy Schools and was one of the principal marine painters in Britain by the late eighteenth century. This work forms one in a series of six dockyard scenes by the artist which were engraved as a set.
