The West India Docks as they appeared in March 1802
A view of 'The West India Docks as they appeared in March 1802'. Across the basin are small figures, one with a wheelbarrow. Warehouses are on the RHS. The docks opened in 1802 and stretched around the Isle of Dogs. They were the first of the enclosed and protected docks of the 19th Century, enabling the success of the port of London. Inscribed in ink at top right: 'Gent. Mag. Oct. 1802. Pl. I. p.897'.
