Sir Robert Peel
Sir Robert Peel( 1788-1850) was a major British statesman. He was leader of the Tory Party, the latterday Conservative party and Prime Minister, 1834-5, 1839, and 1841-6. He resigned after splitting his party with his decision to repeal the Corn Laws in 1848. This allowed free trade of grain in Britain abolishing the tariffs which had governed it previously.
This print is derived from a portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence a celebrated portrait artist of the Regency period. Peel is shown in stateman stance leaning against a small table in his study.
