Giovanni Baptista Belzoni
Belzoni was born in Padua, Italy, travelled widely, and was by turns a performer, archaeologist and explorer. He came to England at the age of 24 and spent the next decade on stage. This print depicts the 6 foot, 6 inch Belzoni at Sadler's Wells clad in an animal skin with a plumed headdress. Between 1816 and 1820, Belzoni worked in Egypt. He uncovered a number of important ancient sites, artefacts from which are still displayed in the British Museum. Belzoni died of dysentery aged 45 while on an African expedition.
