Her Majesty Queen Caroline Landing at Dover
Queen Caroline of Brunswick, the estranged wife of George IV, returned from exile in Italy in response to the king's attempt to divorce her. The queen's cause was popular with British women, and her widespread public support was co-opted by liberal politicans who interpreted her situation as a symbolic struggle against corrupt royal authority. Handkerchiefs of this sort were popular souvenirs among her supporters.
