Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1909
Inside the men's lavatory beneath the Empire Theatre, Leicester Square
This lithograph by John Copley depicts a busy gents' lavatory underneath the Empire in Leicester Square. The Empire, which at the date of Copley's print was a theatre, later became a cinema.
Copley was a member of the Senefelder Club, a group formed in 1909 to celebrate and promote lithography. His early prints show the influence of French Realist and Impressionist Jean-Louis Forain. However he soon developed his own style in a printmaking career that spanned over forty-five years.
